What might be some steps to increase the effectiveness of your team?

Building effective teams is a common challenge for most businesses. Creating a top-notch leadership team with the right mix of people and expertise can be one of your most important responsibilities as a leader.

It is also about creating the conditions that produce synergy and enable your team to deliver the most efficient and effective outcomes. Synergy allows different parts to work together in a way that creates a greater effect than the sum of the individual contributions.

1Trust

In the past, teams often stayed together for much longer, which allowed knowledge and trust to develop naturally. Today, project-based work and the fast pace of business mean that teams are formed much more quickly.

That means you need to speed up the process of building familiarity and trust. Set up situations where the team behaves naturally: eating together, playing together, laughing together, and solving problems together.

You need the trust of your team, because people follow trust and integrity, not simply a person. Treat everyone as equals. Be honest, ethical, consistent, assertive, and respectful. Listen to your team, make decisions, and defend them in complicated situations.

2Common Goal

Goal clarity adds focus, power, and efficiency. It is important to set team goals together, prioritize them, and establish ways to measure outcomes and progress.

Ask: What will success look like? How will you know if expectations are being met? You want all members of the team to remember the objectives every day and every hour.

When your team works with objectives in view, their motivation, focus, and effort increase. It becomes easier to make the right decisions, optimize work, and prioritize correctly.

3Belonging and Team Identity

Identity exists when team members feel connected to the team and experience a strong sense of unity. When this happens, people begin to put the interests of the team before their own.

Team identity acts as the glue that keeps people united. It becomes stronger as the team gets clearer about its purpose, its way of operating, and how it relates to other groups.

Team identity makes members feel special and different from other groups. One of your leadership challenges is to help your team feel special, different, and better in the sense of shared pride and belonging.

4Knowing Each Other

If you want to improve teamwork, help people get to know each other better. Informal conversations bring people together and warm up human relationships.

You also need to understand how your colleagues think, what they like, what they do not like, how they feel, what motivates them, what they expect, and what they fear. Be willing to be vulnerable and share about yourself as well.

5Communication

Research at MIT found that one of the strongest predictors of team success is the pattern of communication inside the group: balancing listening and speaking, engaging directly with many others on the team, not just with the line manager, and creating frequent connections.

Take time to think about how to help your people interact more often, so everyone is involved and dialogue keeps circulating across the team.

6Processes

Carefully analyze how your team works. You need perspective and the ability to step back from day-to-day concerns in order to observe your team from the balcony.

You want to understand how the team functions, what tasks it executes, how those tasks are carried out, and what difficulties are being encountered. In other words, you want to understand your team’s processes.

The people on your team are usually too busy executing to step back and analyze how things work. Your role is to do this and find ways to improve them. Analysis and improvement of the team’s processes should become a routine leadership task. Small improvements introduced steadily can make a huge difference in the medium and long term.

7Diversity

To build a great team, you need diverse thinkers. Differences in background, experience, age, race, and gender can help a team think outside the box and approach problems from many different angles.

But if you still get too much sameness, it may be because those with minority views are simply staying quiet. Be assertive and gather input from everyone, not just the dominant players.

Use prompts like “Tell us more,” “What if,” and “How about” to question assumptions and arrive at better outcomes. The rewards of taking all these steps can be significant and help your team perform at its best.
